School Law I: Schools, Students & Teachers (credit through Colorado State University Pueblo*)
A number of legal questions and issues are often presented in our K-12 schools. While teachers and administrators are not trained as lawyers, it can be valuable to know about basic legal issues and how they have been addressed by the law and our court system. This introductory course presents an up-to-date study of six major areas of “school law,” including attendance, instruction, due process rights of students, freedom of speech/expressions and publications, searches and seizures, and student discipline. This course will present an overview of these topic areas and will explore relevant case law, providing you with some fundamental understanding of school law and issues in these areas.
